Recently, the actress visited Dokdo Island and posted pictures from her visit on her social media account. In some of them, Lee is seen holding the Taegeukgi, or the South Korean flag, in her hand or sporting mini flags on her hat.

The post has attracted some conflicting comments from netizens. On the one hand, Korean netizens congratulated Lee on her visit since Dokdo is known to be a difficult place to visit due to challenging weather and other conditions.

  • “Welcome to Takeshima, Okinoshima, Oki District, Shimane Prefecture, 685-0000, Japan!”

In reality, Dokdo is a disputed territory claimed by both the Koreas and Japan. In Japanese, it is referred to as Takeshima. Though South Korea is currently in control of the Dokdo islets, Japan contests its sovereignty over the region. While South Korea classifies it as Dokdo-ri, a part of the Ulleung County of the Gyeongsang Province, Japan claims it is a part of Okinoshima, Oki District, Shimane Prefecture.

Tisn’tsn’t the first time the mention of Dokdo has brought criticism toward a Korean celebrity. A few months ago, BTS members were targeted with anti-Korean racism after a clip of t”em “Dokdo Is Our Land” resurfaced online.
